History has been made with the appointment of a new president of global accountancy association DFK International.

Demetris Demetriou is the first member from Cyprus to be made president of DFK International, which is ranked amongst the top 10 accountancy associations in the world and has over 300 offices in more than 80 countries.

Demetris takes on the role in his 20th year of being part of DFK International as co-founder of audit and accounting firm DFK Demetriou Trapezaris based in Nicosia, Cyprus.

He is the 11th president of the association, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, and follows on from USA-based Scott Hazy who held the previous three-year term of office.

His appointment was made at the recent annual conference of DFK International in Montreal, Canada.

Demetris said: “To be appointed president of DFK International and to lead a top ten global accountancy association really is an honour and a privilege, particularly being from a relatively small firm and country.

“As a partner of a small to medium-size firm, I am representative of the vast majority of our members and recognise the difference that they and the larger member firms together make as an association.

“I am looking forward to leading DFK International in building upon its founding commitment to provide exceptional service to clients around the world with international business interests.”

Demetris, who served as deputy president for the last three years, intends to continue Scott’s legacy as president as well as making his own mark on the development of DFK International.

Demetris said: “Scott’s leadership was excellent and during his presidency, DFK International experienced growth in existing markets as well as new markets with members now in the important trading centres in the world.

“His main legacy as president was spearheading the use of the latest technology to take the association further forward and I want to continue with that focus.

“As an association, we have made many technological advancements in recent years and I will be encouraging more to be done in areas such as cloud technology to improve our communication and service to clients.

“Under Scott’s presidency, we have also been reviewing our constitution and I will be taking those discussions forward to ensure DFK International is best-placed to advance with changes in the business and accounting world.”

Demetris is a strong advocate of DFK’s ability to foster friendships and working relationships among members and is also keen to build on that attribute which he sees as fundamental to its success in cross-border alliances.

He said: “I am keen to reach out to the younger partners and managers in our firms because they are the future and it is important that they are fully aware of DFK International and the benefits of being a member.”

Demetris will be supported in his role by executive director Martin Sharp and regional vice-presidents, namely Linda Kachiu (The Americas), Navin Patel (Asia-Pacific) and Mark Lamb (Europe, Middle East and Africa).
